1. Talk with the Neighbours

The easiest way to stop noise from your neighbour’s yard is by asking them politely to stop it. However, if there is ongoing construction on your neighbour’s backyard you should cut them some slack.

But if the noise is due to something else, you should ask them to minimize it. Walk up to them calmly and explain how the noise is affecting you.

You can suggest some of the soundproofing ideas that you know could help them.

If they are the understanding type, they will hear you and consider what you have said.

However, if they are violent, talking won’t solve anything.

You may have to consider other means of such as soundproofing your home.

Remember, your peace of mind is paramount, so if they don’t want to minimize it, just go to the second step.

2. Seal the Gaps and Cracks in Your Door and Window

One way of minimizing noise from reaching your home is by sealing the gaps and cracks on the door and windows.

You may not know this, but any type of gap, no matter the size, has the potential of letting in a lot of noise.

The best way to deal with it is by using soundproofing compound to seal them. A good example is a green glue.

Green glue is both an adhesive and a soundproofing compound.

Besides sealing the gaps and cracks on your door and window, the compound will help in reducing noise significantly.

Before applying the glue, you need to clean the area around the door and window frame.

Remove dirt, dust, and any old adhesive then let it dry before you apply the glue.

For the gap between your door and the floor, you need to use a door sweep to seal it.

Besides the noise, a door sweep also prevents bugs from getting into your home.

Once you have applied the glue, allow it to dry first before using the door.

The good thing about the glue is that you can use on any surface, it doesn’t have to be door and window.

A foam tape is also a good option to consider when you can’t get green glue.

3. Use Soundproof Curtains

Soundproof curtains are different from the regular curtain in that they are much thicker and denser. One of my most recommended curtains is NICETOWN Blackout Panels.

Their soundproof properties make them good material for preventing the noise from your neighbors backyard.

The curtains are good at deadening noise and preventing the formation of echo. The thickness and density of the material makes them good at minimizing noise.

Soundproof curtains are also aesthetically pleasing which makes them good when you want to give your home a new look.

The curtains are not only restricted to the windows; you can use then on the doors too.

The curtains also good at keeping light out. If you want more natural light in your home, then you should consider other means of deadening noise.

4. Hang Acoustic Panels on the Wall

Acoustic panels are also another means of blocking noise from your neighbour’s backyard. The panels can be hanged or attached on the walls with an adhesive.

If you choose to hang them, you’ll need to use command strips or push pins.

Acoustic foams are mostly used in recording studios to absorb and prevent sound reflection.

When installing the panels, the materials that make up the wall will determine the type of method you can use.

If your walls are concrete, you’ll need to use liquid nails but for softer walls and drywall, use a spray adhesive.

Nevertheless, if you are renting the home, you may have to use command strips because they don’t leave holes or adhesive residue.

You can also attach the panels on a soft board then attach it on the walls. Doing this, you’ll minimise any damage to the wall.

When using an adhesive, ensure you clean the wall thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. The solution will eliminate dirt and ensure the adhesive sticks well on the wall.

5. Add Mass to the door

Besides sealing the gaps on your door as a means of soundproofing it, you can add Mass to it. A thin door can let in a lot of noise because there is nothing to block it.

Adding Mass reinforces the door and minimizes the amount of noise getting into your home.

There are several materials you can use to add Mass to your door. They include, Mass loaded vinyl, soundproof blankets, insulation board, and green glue.

Insulation boards are simply wooden fiberboard. They provide additional insulation and sound deadening properties.

Installing the board on your door will block and minimize the amount of noise getting into your home.

Make sure you use green glue to attach the boards to the door.

Green glue is an adhesive that is also effective at minimizing noise. So when you use it with the insulation boards, you’ll actually be killing two birds with one stone.

If you want a less strenuous means, then consider hanging soundproof blankets on your door.

The blankets are made of acoustic properties that help in blocking the noise from reaching you.

The blankets are also easy to install because they come with grommets. You just have to hang them on the hooks, and you are good to good.

6. Install a Fence on Your Backyard

You can also block the noise from your neighbour’s backyard by installing a fence on your backyard—the sort of fence you put up matters a lot.

For instance, concrete fences are much effective at blocking noise compared to wooden fences.

Brick and concrete are quite expensive and difficult to set up. However, they are good at blocking the noise from reaching you.

Hedge fences are also good at blocking the noise, but they require a lot of maintenance. The shrubs have to be thick for them to be effective at blocking the noise.

You can also plant trees and shrubs in the backyard though this is not an immediate solution to your noise problem.

Trees and shrubs act as an obstacle against the noise.
